Hate to admit it, but it’s been almost a week since we returned from Affiliate Summit…and this is my first blog post since before I left. Bad blogger. I had, of course, planned to blog every day while I was in Boston. Who was I kidding? I can’t even manage to blog every day I’m at the office…or even at home. But I should have fired at least one post off while I was traveling…and I know exactly where I dropped the ball. I should have assumed I wouldn’t be able to write new posts, and I should have written one and saved it as a draft in advance.
When you’re on the road it can be hard to stick to your blogging, and because keeping your blog fresh is good for your readers as well as for the search engine rankings, it’s a good idea to plan for the possibility that you won’t be able to write new blogs while you’re traveling.
You can do this by writing a post or two in advance, and saving those posts as drafts. Then all you have to do is log in and publish the draft(s) every couple days - or however often you’d like to publish.
Alternatively, if you’re a Wordpress blogger you can use a feature called ‘post via e-mail,’ and get a blog posted straight from your Blackberry or other smart phone. This is Wordpress’ straight-forward explanation of the feature:
“To post to WordPress by e-mail you must set up a secret e-mail account with POP3 access. Any mail received at this address will be posted…”
This is a great option if you plan to spend time sitting at the airport without your computer or without internet access. To set this up in Wordpress, go to ‘Settings’ > ‘Writing’, and then scroll down to ‘Post via e-mail.’
I’ve got another trip coming up - and I’m guaranteeing you (and myself) that I’ll heed my own advice next time to keep the blog posts flowing - even while I’m on the road.
